I am a former smoker. After fourteen failed attempts at quitting smoking, I discovered vaping
and on my first try, I managed to quit! I have since continued to vape nicotine-based liquid.
For me and many people I know who began smoking in the 1980s, vaping has saved them
from a continued life of harmful cigarette smoking.
If the ban goes ahead, I don’t fear I will return to smoking; I know I will. I am extremely concerned about the effect this will have on my health and finances. I also fear a black market will emerge and sell potentially dangerous vaping products.
Under New Zealand’s model, nicotine vapes are sold as adult consumer products from licensed retail outlets with strict age verification. Vape shops can provide expert advice, support, and a wider range of products. Licensed retailers are unlikely to sell to kids if there is a risk of losing their licence and paying large fines.
Consider adult vapers who are former smokers and not just youth vapers. Vaping should at least be as easy to access as deadly cigarettes.
