The black market thrives under strict prohibition, circulating products that may be laced with dangerous substances and are more harmful than their legal counterparts. The lesson from this is clear: outright prohibition and stringent regulation often intensify the issues they aim to

resolve. Instead of clamping down on all vaping products, a more nuanced approach is needed, one that balances public health concerns with the realities of nicotine use and addiction.

Advocating for Targeted and Practical Regulation

The goal should be to implement targeted, sensible regulations that ensure the availability of safe, legal vaping products for adult users. This approach not only helps to diminish the allure of illegal, unregulated products but also addresses the root cause of youth vaping without reverting to failed prohibitionist measures. Ensuring that legal vaping products are accessible as safer alternatives to tobacco is crucial in the broader public health battle against smoking and its associated risks.

I advocate for a balanced and nuanced regulatory framework, one that acknowledges the complexities of nicotine dependency, the reality of current vaping practices among Australian youth, and the need for accessible, safer alternatives for adult smokers. This approach should not only seek to minimize harm but also ensure that we do not inadvertently drive individuals toward more harmful tobacco products or foster a burgeoning black market of unregulated vaping products.
