Professor Paul Dietze - The Burnet Institute



Professor Paul Dietze joined NDRI in June 2020 to lead the Melbourne Office in a dual role with the Burnet Institute. He is one of Australia’s leading alcohol and other drug epidemiologists with a significant national and international profile. Building on over 20 years’ experience and an outstanding track record in obtaining competitive grants, he has established a substantial body of work focused on key drug related issues such as opioid overdose, risky alcohol use and methamphetamine use and harms. He currently leads the largest and only active cohort studies of people who inject drugs and people who smoke methamphetamine in Australia. He has a strong track record of conducting research that impacts policy and practice and is an invited speaker and consultant to national and international governments and organisations. He was member of the Guidelines Development Group of the World Health Organization’s Guidelines for the Community Management of Opioid Overdose and currently leads a multi-country study of take-home naloxone in three Central Asian countries and Ukraine.

Australian National Advisory Council on Alcohol and Other Drugs (ANACAD), that the prescription policy is failing and that the Minister's proposed vaping crackdown will only make things worse.
